Former USC All-American wide receiver Lynn Swann has been elected into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.
Also, former USC national championship-winning head coach John McKay and Howard Jones have been named to the Rose Bowl Game's 12-member All-Century Class, with McKay being selected as the class's All-Century Coach.
Swann will be installed in a public induction ceremony on Dec. 30 at the Pasadena Convention Center (tickets are available online at www.sharpseating.com), and also honored on the field during the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl Game. A permanent plaque in his honor will be displayed at the Court of Champions at the Rose Bowl stadium.
He becomes the 23rd Trojan player, coach or administrator inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.
Joining Swann as 2013 inductees are former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr and former Ohio State offensive tackle Orlando Pace.
Swann played in the Rose Bowls following the 1972 and 1973 seasons, catching a touchdown pass in the first game. He had 11 catches for 155 yards in both games. The Trojans won the national championship in 1972. He went on to be a first round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, playing there for 9 years, including in 4 Super Bowls (he was MVP of Super Bowl X). He is a member of the College Football, Pro Football, USC Athletic and Pittsburgh Steelers Halls of Fame.
In commemoration of this year's 100th Rose Bowl Game, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses created a special program to honor great players and coaches throughout the game's history. Over the course of the 2013 regular season, members of the Football Writers Association of America selected one Rose Bowl Game representative from each decade to comprise an All-Century Class. The panelists, spanning media outlets across the country, also nominated one overall player and one overall coach who best captured the passion, strength, tradition and honor of the Rose Bowl Game.
In his 16 years (1960-75) as USC's head coach for USC, McKay's teams won nine Pacific-8 Conference titles. He led the Trojans to eight Rose Bowl Game appearances, including five victories, four of which captured national titles. McKay was the first coach to take four consecutive teams to Pasadena and is tied for the most wins in Rose Bowl Game history. His eight all-time appearances in the Rose Bowl Game are tied for second all-time. McKay is well known for popularizing the I-formation and emphasized a power running game. He coached two Heisman Trophy winners and countless All-Americans throughout his career. McKay was a 1991 Rose Bowl Hall of Fame inductee, as well as a member of the College Football and USC Athletic Halls of Fame.
During his 16 seasons (1925-40), Jones led USC to the Rose Bowl Game five times, winning all appearances by a combined 95 points. Prior to his arrival, Trojan football had not secured a national title nor featured a single All-American. He led his "Thundering Herd" teams to eight conference championships. His Rose Bowl victories in 1932, 1933 and 1939 led to national championships for USC. Jones' overall record at USC was a remarkable 121-36-13. Along with being an inaugural member of the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1989, Jones was a charter member of the College Football and USC Athletic Halls of Fame.
