Grandmother's stunning knitted models of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit characters

NO fan would ever accuse JRR Tolkien’s epic fantasy The Lord of The Rings of being woolly... until now.
Prolific knitter Denise Salway has created wool models of their heroes of the Middle Earth fantasy series.
Dwarves, dragons or wizards, nothing is too ambitious for Denise, 50, who has knitted dozens of amazingly life-like figures from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
Denise does not work to any set patterns and comes up with the designs herself.
After putting down her knitting needles in her teens, grandmother-of-one Denise, was convinced to pick them up again to create 150 guest favours at her daughter Lisa’s wedding last year.
So impressed were some male members of the wedding party, Denise who lives in Penyfai, was asked to knit special socks to go with their traditional kilted outfits.
From there she was convinced to have a go at knitting some of the characters from The Hobbit and she hasn’t looked back since.
“It’s all from my head but now I have started writing them down,” explains Denise.
“I quite like a challenge. Some of them take a long time, Smaug was over a month to do. Figures can take a day or a day or a half.”
Characters she has knitted include the Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and even Smaug the dragon - a piece of work that has won her fans from across the world.
Pictures posted to Denise’s twitter account @KnittingWitchUK has seen her work lauded by The Hobbit stars Graham McTavish and Stephen Hunter.
But her work extends beyond The Hobbit, she has also knitted former US President Abraham Lincoln and actress Audrey Hepburn.
“They make people smile and that gives me pleasure,” added Denise.
