Champs prove they belong in 2A


PULASKI -- Stepping up to 2A classification left plenty of questions for the Cascade Champions entering the 2013-2014 season.
In their inaugural District 12-AA game against Giles County on Friday night, the Champions put some of those questions to bed with a 65-58 win over the Bobcats.
Though the Champs (7-1, 1-0 12-AA) got off to a sluggish start, Cascade rallied around senior Will Holt in the second quarter and recaptured the lead with a 21-point effort heading to the half.
Holt led the Champs with eight points in the second frame, including a pair of treys.
Key helper
While Holt led all scorers with 27 points, hey got some key help down the stretch from fellow senior Jesse Barnes.
Barnes, who added 13, scored nine in the fourth quarter alone.
While the Champs rallied for the 3-point lead at the half, Giles County outscored Cascade in the third quarter thanks to some big play from Devonte Jiminez.
Jiminez, who led the Bobcats with 20 points, knocked down 11 of his team's 16 points in the third quarter.
Holt hits
Still, the Champs managed to worked the ball into Holt's hands in the fourth quarter and he was able to seal the deal, making 5-of-8 attempts from the free throw line.
While Barnes led the team in the paint late in the game, James Lattimore gave the Champs some big minutes throughout the game as well. He added eight points to the Champions' cause.
With Holt and Barnes leading the way late, Giles County also got some key supporting offense from Kimari Bledsoe, who added 15 points for the Bobcats.
As a team, Cascade did well at the line, cashing in on 14-of-23 tries for 61 percent, which helped close out the win down the stretch.
The Champs get a bit of a break until they tip-off at home on Thursday evening against Huntland in a make up game set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
